The Purebred Herd

It is only in the past few years that I have started to form a herd of purebred, registered Nubian females (having kept pure bucks for a considerable number of years longer). My foundation herd is based upon does that were selected from heavy milking lines, lines that classified well and also from dams that I found appealing to the eye. The focus in my herd will always be upon milk production, balanced with correctness,  longevity and a good temperament. Alongside breeding a Nubian that I feel is in keeping with the breed - being dual purpose. I plan in the future to take part in classification and milk test programs to assess the true success of my purebred animals.

The milking does are fed a 16% commercial dairy ration, as well as sunflower seeds and oats in their mix. They are also provided with the highest quality forage available, and have access to pasture in the summer. My purebreds also love treats such as apples, carrots and strawberries! They live in a separate area entirely to my commercial herd, so a different style of herd management is possible. The effectiveness of any feeding regime is assessed by measuring the milk production of each doe at regular intervals.

All kids are bottle raised on a CAE preventative program - with no exceptions. This is an ideal way to maintain a CAE/CL free herd. They are fed free choice hay, as well as a grain ration mix alongside their milk.
